In September Nikki bought a used 2021 Dodge Ram truck from Fort Collins Dodge. The truck had around 70,000 miles on it, so she decided to buy an extended warranty from the dealer. Within 30-days of buying the truck, the “check engine” light came on. She took it to Greeley Dodge for a diagnosis and they can’t figure it out. We referred her to our auto expert in Mead, Colorado at Hands On Auto Tech (around 29-miles away). We know Tom Maggio will accurately assess the problem and give her an honest estimate for repairs. As for the extended warranty, she may have a problem getting it covered. Most extended warranties on used cars have a waiting period before they “kick in” and they also exclude any pre-existing conditions. In her case, because the check-engine light came on so soon after her purchase, it is most likely a pre-existing cause.
Consumer Tip: Beware of used car extended warranties. Most all problems with used cars will be from pre-existing conditions and, therefore, not covered. Also, there are severe limitations to most used car warranties where coverage ends when the cumulative total of repairs equals the market value of the car. So, the long you own the vehicle, the less the mareket value will be, yet the cost of repairs will accumulate as it gets older. The result? The warranties are often “self-extinguishing” and don’t last for the term purchased.
